Maria Callas Estate

Centenary of the Lyrical Music Diva

The greatest and most complete interpreter of contemporary lyrical music, Maria Callas, was born in New York on December 2, 1923, into a Greek immigrant family. She died in Paris on September 16, 1977. After her parents separated in 1937, she went with her mother to Athens, where she began her studies at the Conservatory. Her career as an opera singer began in Italy in 1947, and two years later she went on an international tour, visiting the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, in Lisbon, on March 27, 1958, performing “Violetta” from the opera “La Traviatta”.

CTT  – Correios de Portugal  launched today, July 24th, this philatelic issue of two stamps to mark the centenary of the birth of the lyrical music diva, in collaboration with  “The Maria Callas Estate”.  The graphic design work was by AF Atelier, and the printing was by Belgium Post – Bpost Philately & Stamps Printing.
